The Frances Perkins Center is hosting several upcoming events celebrating our first female cabinet member and still the longest-serving Secretary of Labor.

April 21st – Celebrating Frances Perkins and Her Commitment to Social Justice

Join us in Washington, DC, on April 21st as we celebrate Secretary Perkins’s amazing achievements.

When: Tuesday, April 21st, 4:00 PM
Where: The Great Hall of the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s Frances Perkins Building, 200 Constitution Ave.
Who & What: A program of remembrance and celebration, with speakers including:

* Kirstin Downey, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Perkins biographer
* Dr. Christopher Breiseth, president-emeritus of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute and personal friend of Secretary Perkins
* Frances Perkins’s grandson, Tomlin Perkins Coggeshall, whose words will be accompanied by photos of the Perkins home.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has been invited to introduce the program.

April 21st – Frances Perkins Center DC Launch Party

Later that evening, the celebration moves to the Woman’s National Democratic Club, where Frances Perkins was once a member.

When: Tuesday, April 21st, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM
Where: The Woman’s National Democratic Club, 1526 New Hampshire Avenue NW
Who & What: There will be hors d’oeuvres and drinks, a chance to buy an autographed copy of Kirstin Downey’s new book, The Woman Behind the New Deal: The Life of Frances Perkins, FDR’s Secretary of Labor and His Moral Conscience, and the opportunity to talk with other people who also care passionately about the legacy of Frances Perkins-all while supporting the Frances Perkins Center.

May 2nd – The New New Deal: Building an Economy That Works for All of Us

Come to a conference sponsored by the Frances Perkins Center and join the conversation about rebuilding our economy.

When: Saturday, May 2nd, 8:30 am – 3:00 PM
Where: The Hutchinson Center in Belfast, Maine
Who & What: Maine House Speaker Hannah Pingree, Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman, Economist Dr. Teresa Ghilarducci (author of When I’m 64: The Plot Against Pensions and the Plan to Save Them), and leaders from government, labor, and the nonprofit sector will lead a daylong examination of the current economic situation. Join in the conversation as we search for solutions to the problems that plague our system. Topics include healthcare, part-time and self-employed workers, women in the workforce, unions, retirement, and more.
