Happy Dyngus Day!

April 25, 2011

Easter Monday is Dyngus Day. At South Bend’s West Side Democratic Club doors open 9am with live shots all morning on WNDU Channel 16. Beer, sausage and sauerkraut, polka dancing, and (can it get any better?) politics. “From Bobby Kennedy to Bill Clinton” and candidates for every elected office from senator to county coroner – if they’re a Democrat and they’re running for office in Indiana, they come for Dyngus Day. The Wikipedia entry for Easter Monday has Dyngus Day about right: “In South Bend, Indiana, the holiday started as a Polish and Hungarian tradition and has become a political holiday. The politicians go to the bars and eat sausage and sauerkraut trying to win votes.”
