Caribbean Day Parade 2011

The annual DC Caribbean Day Parade down Georgia Avenue was shorter this year and was sadly marred by a shooting  late in the afternoon. But Rachel and I caught some of the parade – the costumes were as outrageous as in years past – and we tried to take some “family friendly” photos:

Local wildlife

On Sunday, we went with some friends for the first time to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, a DC institution along the Anacostia river. Here’s the National Park Service map. As it turns out the world famous waterlilies are still wintering, so we saw a lot of muddy water. But, it was a sunny day and it gave us a chance to admire nature’s resilience given the awful pollution of the Anacostia river.Rachel spotted the creature pictured here – I think he’s a black rat snake. We also saw a wide variety of birds, a little turtle, and trash.

Congo Chancery

During a walk through Rock Creek Park and down 16th Street on Saturday, Rachel and I were struck by the disrepair of this otherwise beautiful residential structure at the intersection of 16th Street and Colorado Avenue, NW, which the sign in front intriguingly identifies as the Republic of the Congo Chancery. Who knows why this place hasn’t been kept up, but it’s hard not to find some symbolism. Read the rest of this entry ?

Woohoo! Petworth’s “stinky” Safeway is getting a major makeover. How big is the news? Local blogger Prince of Petworth captures the spirit, “This news is so huge that I have passed out twice since starting to write this and I’m only on the first paragraph. This is, in the parlance of our times, a true gamechanger.”
